Noverita & Richie’s engagement shoot with their dog

A lot of couples have inquired about having an engagement shoot with their dog. Being a downtown girl, it seems that every condo-dwelling couple has a dog these days. After all, a dog is a couple’s best friend right? The idea of having your dog at your engagement session can be daunting but it’s definitely feasible with some tips. Here’s how Noverita and Richie were able to successfully incorporate their lovely shih tzu into their spring engagement shoot at High Park.

Bring goodies: This is perhaps the most important tip. This ensures that your dog will be rewarded for sitting still or for completing a trick. Do not leave home without treats or you will regret it!
Bring extra help: I usually recommend the couple to bring along a friend who can keep an eye out for the dog while I’m shooting the couple’s portraits or when we venture off into areas where dogs are not permitted.
Confirm that your shoot location allows pets: Luckily for us, High Park is very large and has both natural and paved trails under the canopy of mature trees; perfect for this type of engagement session. Here’s a map of off-leash area of High Park in Toronto.
Time of the day: Dogs do not look good or feel good during midday sun. It is important to remember that dogs are vulnerable to injuries and illnesses related to hot weather including heat stroke and sunburn. Make sure your shoot is scheduled for early morning light or sunset. Not only will this give you better photos but your dog will thank you for it as well.
Dress up: If you are going to look your best then why not dress up your pet as well. Throw on a little sweater or jersey on your little friend. Make sure that your selection fits well with what you’re wearing!
